Writing is often edited multiple times before publication. There are three basic levels of editing:
Substantive editing
Copy editing
Proof-reading
Substantive editing focuses on the structure, content, and flow of the document and tightens the prose at the paragraph and sentence level. This is an early stage of editing, while the paper is still in draft form. It can result in material changes to the document. This work often requires subject matter expertise and close collaboration with the author(s). We can support this process through our Editorial Assessment service.
Copy editing ensures that the document is clear, consistent, and error-free. It checks for spelling, grammar, punctuation, capitalization, verb tense agreement, formatting, and consistency. It also addresses wordiness, awkward and unclear sentences and phrases, and other minor problems. It is performed on papers that are in, or near, their final form. There may be many edits per page, but there should be no changes to the structure, tone, or meaning of the paper.
Proof-reading is the final step to ensure that a document is error-free before publication. The goal to is to catch any minor problems that might have slipped past the authors. There may be one or two edits per page, often fewer.
